Overall, all of the problems that we researched concern extra curricular activities and different aspects concerning this issue.
One issue in schools is finding a coach or person to run sports teams and clubs. One of the main issues is just finding a person who can meet the qualifications to be a good coach. Not all people who volunteer to be a coach or are looking to be a coach can fit the character, and have what it takes to show their skills. (Jen)
Another issue in schools is making sure that are are equal amounts of sports teams offered for both males and females. Although the actual number of sports offered might be the same, the participation percentage in men's sports is exceptionally higher than that of girls sports teams. Prior to the Title IX law, which states that: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal assistance", woman had no equal opportunities. After 1972 when the Title IX law was passed, woman than were granted equal opportunities including that of equal number of sports teams offered for females in public schools. (Stacey)
Another issue in schools is what role the extracurricular activities are actually playing in a student’s experience throughout school. It needs to be known if these activities are actually playing a role and helping students in school. Are they actually working or are they just a waste of money? (Kate)
Today is schools there is an issue with how extra curricular activities will be funded. This is a major issue because if the state or district isn't providing enough money for these activities, parents and the community need to get more involved then they already are. Extra curricular activities are important to schools because they help build character.(Alyssa)
In todays world many students participate in extracurricular actives all over the country. For each and every student there is an activity for them, so in my mind it is important to first give each student a fair chance just like every other student has and to be sure that these activies are brighting the minds of these students. Drugs can only bring students down from their potential and by fixing this issue will make students and there future a bright one. (Nick)
Parents involvement is very important when it comes to children and their involvement in extra curricular activities. Whether or not to push your child to his or her limits rarely comes to a parents mind until the moment is too late. We must ask our children what they like doing, and be able to understand that they need natural play time outside of extra curricular activities as well. Parents also have numerous ways they are able to get involved by coaching, being a fan on the sidelines, or head of a booster club\hosting pasta parties. (Stefanie)
II. Research Summary
Jen - The research that I did for Who will run the sports teams and what should the coaches bring to the team, was done through the research data bases we learned about including HELIN and EBSCOhost. I also used google as a research tool. I learned that there are millions of websites and articles that can be very beneficial to someone who is interested in becoming a coach, and also for schools who are looking to hire a coach. There are many ways one can look up information and should never have a problem with understanding the requirements needed to be a good coach.
Stacey - In researching the topic question of "Are there equal opportunities for males and females in sports", i found that under the Title IX law, they had to be equal. Title IX states that: No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, or denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal assistance. In 1972, Title IX was passed, banning sex discrimination in schools, whether in athletics or academics. I found that females have fewer participation overall in sports than males, and less opportunities, where as males receive more scholarships and newer uniforms and equipment. Although in the past five years, the gap between male and female athletic participation at the high school level has grown, the level of participation in athletics for females still does not reach that of males.
Kate - In researching the question, “What role do extracurricular activities play in students experience in school?” I found out that extracurricular activities play a major role in a student’s experience throughout school. Students involved in extracurricular activities were more likely to have a higher grade point average, stronger sense of self and greater feeling of belonging with their peers. The activities are also a way for students to feel closeness with their school and to make friends. Overall, extracurricular activities contributed to a student’s academics, character, life skills, helping students at risk of failing out of school, and social status.
Alyssa- Subsequent to researching the question, "Is there adequate funding for extra curricular activities in schools" I found out how this issue has been a growing problem. It is obvious that these activities are important to a child's growth so how are they going to be funded. The state helps out and gives a sum of money to go towards all extra curricular activities, but not necessarily is it enough to fund all clubs and sports. When this occurs schools provide fundraising such as the booster club or bake sales. Although this isn't exactly easy this could also benefit a child and the team because they will be working together to complete a goal. In the end I found that if extra curricular activities are as important as they seem and the state can't provide adequate funding then the club/sport/or organization should feel fundraising is great way to make up for the needed money.
Nick- While I was researching the question on whether students should get tested for drug in extracurricular activities I found a great deal of information on this topic that I did not know before. The main thing that I found was the number of school that need to start to drug test students because it is a growing problem in the U.S. In my mind if a student is an athlete at a school they should lead by example and should have nothing to worry about and stay away from harmful things. Also what i noticed when I was looking up information about this topic was the many different cases that have already happened that are a big deal. The number of cases that I read about went all the way to the supreme court which in my mind is a big deal. There is know question that this topic is a growing one and soon there should be a decision if school should or should not drug test.
Stefanie - While doing my research i found that there was some information on my question of, "How can parents get involved in extra curricular activities?" a lot that i found was pertaining to the subject of pushing your child too far. Overbooking them with numerous activity. I used some online websites that included links to different books, i also used EBSCO Host and Helin. All the information i came across was helpful in my presentation.
